Description

The project consists of the rehabilitation of the Intelhorce textile industrial complex (1957-2004) in order to transform it into the new logistics center for the company Mayoral Moda Infantil in Málaga. To this end, the former finishing nave is recovered, preserving its spectacular interior space and concrete structure while adding a new envelope. The design of the new façade, made up of folded GRC panels, improves the building’s energy efficiency while expressing the dynamic concept of “fabric” as a representative material of the textile industry to which this building has always been dedicated. At the same time, the rest of the plot is prepared for the company’s future expansion through a sustainable landscape intervention.

The rehabilitation of the main building (Ramón Vázquez Molezún, Manuel María Valdés, 1963) is based on three fundamental objectives:

1. The recovery of the existing structure as the main element of the project.

2. Improving the building’s energy efficiency and adapting it to the new use.

3. Designing a new skin that represents the philosophy of the company.

The main challenge was to integrate these three objectives, and from this the design strategy emerges: to create a solar protection system using the concept of “fabric” as the driving idea behind the final form; “a dress that protects the building from the sun.” By means of the largest GRC panels manufactured in Spain, a new façade is generated in the form of a “pleated skirt” that reduces solar radiation by 39%.
