Description

La Piedra del Letrero is an exceptional geographic point north of the Altiplano de Granada, today a UNESCO Global Geopark. The site lies on the right bank of the Bravatas river, a natural corridor connecting Jaén and Almería on one side, and Andalusia with the Levante on the other. The proximity between both banks has generated one of the narrowest points along the entire river. This factor, together with the impressive rocky outcrop visible from great distances, probably caused prehistoric populations to be struck by the place, leaving their mark through cave paintings. It is a landmark site that has been significant for thousands of years and that, even today, hosts the pilgrimage of Saints Alodía and Nunilón of Huéscar.

“!Alodía si te vas, Nunilón, aquí te espero; nos iremos a juntar en la Piedra del Letrero!”

The project is integrated into this context of more than 5,000 years, in which temporal condition disappears. De-anthropizing the intervention was resolved through the placement of uncut stones with a natural edge, making it possible to provide the useful spaces that gave meaning to the intervention: pedestrian access to the rock shelter and the configuration of spaces for the proper visibility of the paintings.

The result becomes dissolved in time as a natural element within the environment in which architecture disappears. The rocks generate a minimal alteration of the site while coexisting with their new organicity.
