Description

The project is located in Plaza Músico López Chavarri, in Valencia’s historic Carmen district. The square is not a planned space, but rather the result of the demolition of a previous building, which explains its shortcomings: lack of shade, furniture, vegetation and water. People pass through it, but do not stay, while local residents demand an alternative future from their balconies.

The installation consists of two triangular wooden porticoes supporting a long dark green alicantina blind hanging in a catenary shape, one of the region’s five traditional colors. A circular opening in the canopy lights an inner garden with vegetation and soil from the site itself, helping to temper the climate. Stones acting as counterweights also function as furniture, creating a public “al fresco” space that hosted the TAC! festival program for a few months.

The pavilion is built with natural, pre-industrial and zero-kilometre materials, using local labor: wood from the pine forests of Soria, blinds from Sax, and stones from Teruel, thereby supporting the local economy. The structure is assembled with modules pre-assembled in the workshop, reducing costs, time and risks. Its design considers deconstruction and material recirculation: the wood returns to industry, the stones to the quarry, and the blinds are donated to the community.

The intervention seeks to transform a space of transit into a “place.” Through the mobilization of ephemeral architecture, local economies and neighborhood participation, it generates a pavilion tied to the historical, environmental and social context in which it stands.
