Description

The project consists of the design of a shelter located 16 km from Bogotá, in a subpáramo ecosystem of the tropical Andes (average annual temperature of 9 ºC, average minimum of -1 ºC, and high rainfall). It is an environment naturally rich in biodiversity, but vulnerable to the growing expansion of human activity. The intervention had to function as a family home and, at the same time, as the base of a small rural enterprise dedicated to hosting travelers interested in birdwatching and other animal species.

The beginning of the project coincided with the development of the peace agreement negotiations in Colombia, a historic and necessary process. However, the reduction of armed conflict posed new challenges by facilitating access to and exploitation of the territory, generating new pressures on areas of high ecological value.

In this context, together with the family with whom the project was developed, we agreed that the house and the different micro-landscape actions that made up the project would function as a small testing ground for rehearsing responsible ways of inhabiting the territory and ecotourism strategies aimed at promoting alternative forms of coexistence between humans and other species.

Among the adopted strategies were the use of biogenic materials (recycled cellulose wadding, wool and locally sourced timber), bioclimatic and energy-saving solutions, water management on site, raising the built volume above the ground, and facilitating respectful and playful forms of interaction between humans and other animal species, attending to the different strata of the high Andean forest.
